GBIC stands for gigabit interface converter, which is the first generation of pluggble optical transceivers.
Its emergence is a milestone in the history of optical modules and optical communications. Compared to fixed physical interface optical transceivers, GBIC brought up a great flexibility and cost-effective option in network equipment connectivity.
GBIC is an early optical module form-factor, and most of system manufacturers have stopped producing GBIC interface network equipment and GBIC optical modules. AscentOptics is one of the few companies that still provides GBIC optical modules to the customers who need to maintain older network equipments.
